Fabric lengths: choose the material suitable for your sewing project

Choosing a piece of fabric starts with a concrete question: what garment or accessory do you wish to sew? The pattern provides the needs for length, width, hold, and sometimes elasticity. The catalog Blankabric then allows you to compare materials, patterns, and characteristics to find a compatible reference.

Material, weave, and pattern: three different criteria

Cotton and viscose refer to fibers; poplin and satin describe constructions; floral or striped describes a design. This information complements each other. A satin can contain several types of fibers, and a floral print can be found on fabrics with opposing drapes. Check the composition and properties of each sheet to link the fabric's appearance to the expected result.

Check the piece of fabric's meterage before choosing

Refer to the cutting plan corresponding to your size and the available width. Add pockets, facings, bands, and other finishing pieces. An oriented pattern, stripes to match, or reflections to maintain in the same direction may require additional length. A piece of fabric that you like must also allow for all pieces of the project.

Cross-reference characteristics to refine the selection

For a soft dress, compare fluidity and opacity. For a jacket, examine hold and reinforcement needs. For a t-shirt, check the stretch required by the pattern. Filters help find relevant references, then photos and indications on the sheet allow you to choose the available color and format.

How to choose between two pieces of fabric of the same material?

Compare their construction, drape, transparency, and elasticity. The presence of the same fiber does not guarantee identical behavior. The final choice should correspond to the pattern and the finishes you wish to achieve.
