Jacquard fabric: highlighting a pattern woven into the fabric

In jacquard, the design is achieved through the construction of the fabric. The interplay of threads can produce textures, matte and shiny contrasts, or a more subtle pattern. This technique does not correspond to a specific fiber: examine the composition and drape of the fabric before choosing a jacket, skirt, or accessory.

What jacquard for a jacket or skirt?

A volume-designed model can highlight a fabric that retains its shape. A soft cut will require a different structure. Also, consider the thickness of the seam intersections, especially for pleats, a waistband, or a closure. If the fabric has floating threads on the reverse, plan an interior finish that protects them from snagging. The recommended use on the sheet helps guide the choice, without replacing the pattern's requirements.

Position the pattern before cutting

Unfold the fabric to observe the repetition of the design and its direction. On a central piece, collar, or pockets, the placement of the pattern can transform the final look. Trace the pieces in a single layer when it facilitates symmetry, considering elements to be cut in mirror. Allow enough length for matching: the standard fabric length of the pattern does not necessarily cover a large design repeat.

Choose finishes that respect the texture

Test ironing on a scrap to preserve the texture. Also check for fraying edges and stabilize them if necessary before repeated handling. A lining can facilitate dressing or improve the interior, provided it maintains the desired flexibility or structure. For a bag, the decorative jacquard and reinforcements should be chosen together according to the intended use.

Is jacquard always reversible?

No. The reverse can be visually interesting without being designed to remain visible or endure the same friction. Examine its construction and possible finishes before deciding to use it as the right side.
