From fluid polyester to structured fabric: choose your piece

Polyester is found in a wide variety of fabrics. A voile, satin, crepe, and canvas containing this fiber can produce opposing volumes. To make your choice, first look at the construction and characteristics of the fabric, then the complete composition when it is a blend.

Match the drape to the pattern

A gathered blouse benefits from a fabric that gathers without creating too much volume; a jacket often requires more structure. Also compare transparency, shine, and elasticity. For a light dress, the need for a lining depends on the fabric and the model, not just the word polyester.

Care for finishing tests

Check on a scrap the consistency of the stitch, the overlocking, and the finish of the hem. Some surfaces slip more during cutting: lay them flat, without letting the fabric pull on the edge of the table. Follow the care instructions and test the heat of the iron on an inconspicuous area before pressing seams or applying a reinforcement.

Is polyester satin silk?

No. Satin refers to a weave, while polyester and silk refer to fibers. The composition of the information allows you to know what the fabric is made of, regardless of its shine.
