Polyamide fabric: what criteria to consider before sewing?
The presence of polyamide alone does not define a lingerie fabric, a lining, or a sports fabric. The piece may combine several fibers and exhibit very different levels of elasticity. Choose it based on the constraints of your model and the specific information for the reference.
Prioritize measurable characteristics
If the garment needs to follow movements, check the stretch in both directions and the recovery. For a lining, rather compare the glide and flexibility with the outer fabric. Opacity should be assessed under usage conditions: a fabric that appears opaque at rest may let more light through when stretched.
Conduct a test assembly
Use a needle suitable for the construction, then check the stitching on a scrap. The goal is to avoid skipped stitches, pulled threads, and wavy edges. Follow the care instructions and test reinforcements before applying them to the garment. For technical use, require the properties indicated on the information sheet rather than assuming them.
Are all polyamide fabrics suitable for swimwear?
No. Stretch, water retention, and the stated resistances must be suitable for the project. Composition alone does not guarantee specific resistance to chlorine or UV.
