Canvas fabrics: compare references beyond their name

The word canvas covers very different fabrics. A soft canvas for a garment does not necessarily have the hold of a fabric intended for an accessory. Rely on the material, drape, and recommended use of each fabric to choose an appropriate reference.

Check the density and flexibility required

For a blouse or dress, examine the fluidity and transparency. For a bag, look more at the hold and necessary reinforcements, without assuming particular resistance from the name canvas alone. The same weave can yield very different results depending on the threads and construction of the fabric.

Organize the cutting and assemblies

Identify the grainline before laying out the pieces, especially on a fabric whose pattern makes directions less visible. Test the behavior of the edges and choose a finish that prevents fraying during use. For thick areas, first assemble several scraps to check the passage under the machine foot and the seam's appearance.

Does this collection only contain fabrics for making a test garment?

No. The classification describes a type of fabric. A test garment is chosen to replicate the drape and properties of the final fabric; not all references are suitable for all prototypes.
