Jersey fabric: choose a knit compatible with your pattern

Jersey is a knit, distinct from a woven fabric. For a t-shirt, dress, or fitted piece, the level of stretch and recovery are essential criteria. The presence of elastane can be useful, but it does not replace examining the actual behavior of the fabric.

Compare the elasticity to the model's needs

Some patterns use stretch to fit over the head, hug the body, or eliminate closures. Check the required percentage and the direction in which the fabric stretches. Also control the opacity under tension and the hold of the neckline. A soft jersey and a firmer jersey can create different silhouettes from the same pattern.

Avoid seams that pucker

Test a needle suitable for knits and a stitch that accommodates its stretch. Feed the fabric without pulling on it. For hems and shoulders, follow the pattern's stabilization recommendations and check the result on a scrap. If the edges roll after cutting, handle the pieces carefully to maintain their markings.

Is a serger necessary to sew jersey?

A sewing machine with a stitch suitable for stretch can work for many projects. Conduct a test to check the strength, stretch, and appearance of the seam with your fabric.
