Voile fabric: choosing overlays and finishes
A voile allows you to play with light, lightness, and layers of the garment. It can be suitable for a blouse, a sleeve, or an overlay depending on its drape. Compare the composition and transparency of the fabric: not all fabrics classified as voile will have the same appearance.
Combine with a lining or underlay
The color placed under a voile influences how its shade and pattern are perceived. Test with the intended underlay before choosing finishes. To maintain lightness in sleeves or ruffles, you may plan a different construction from that of the garment body, if the pattern allows.
Sew discreet edges
Seams often remain visible through a transparent fabric. Prepare a test of closed stitching or a narrow finish compatible with the fabric and the shape of the pieces. Avoid pins or markings that would leave traces. When cutting, keep the voile flat and check symmetrical pieces, as slight movement can change their shape.
Can voile be used for curtains?
It depends on its width, drape, available dimensions, and intended care. Check the indicated uses: a fabric intended for clothing does not guarantee all the properties expected for window sheers.
