Fabrics for bags and accessories: choose the structure and reinforcements

A bag, a pouch, and a soft accessory require different structures. When selecting the fabric, consider its structure and the model's constraints: volume, attachments, closure, and seam thickness. The decorative fabric and reinforcements should be considered together.

Consider the stressed areas

Handles, corners, and closures may require reinforced construction. Check the indicated uses for the fabric without assuming a particular strength based solely on its appearance. A jacquard or printed fabric can serve as a decorative surface, but the assembly must correspond to the accessory's intended use.

Use the fabric with precise placement

Small formats can highlight part of the pattern, provided there is still room for linings and finishing pieces. Test a complete assembly on multiple layers before cutting. Choose interfacing and borders based on the desired volume and flexibility.

Can a soft fabric be used to sew a bag?

Yes, for certain models with appropriate assembly and reinforcements. This does not mean that any fabric is suitable for a loaded bag: check the pattern's requirements and the expected strength.
