Stretch and elastic fabrics: choose the stretch suitable for the garment

A highly elastic fabric may suit models that use stretch for movement or fit. For your project, compare the amplitude, direction of elasticity, and the piece of fabric's ability to regain its shape. These criteria are distinct from fluidity.

Measure the necessary stretch

Follow the pattern's method to compare a length at rest and stretched. Check each direction useful for the model, then observe the return to place. A knit that stretches easily but remains deformed will not provide the same support as a fabric that regains its original length well.

Control the garment under tension

Opacity may change when the fabric stretches. Check it for fitted areas, then test an assembly to ensure the thread accompanies the movement. Use a needle and stitch suitable for the construction and let the fabric advance without pulling on the pieces.

The more elastic a fabric is, does it suit all knit patterns?

No. Excessive stretch or a different hold can alter the support and dimensions of the garment. The right choice is the one that meets the model's needs.
