Choosing a Fabric for a Crisp Shirt or a Soft Blouse

A collared shirt and cuffs do not necessarily require the same material as a gathered blouse. For your fabric, start with the details of the pattern: buttoning, inserts, sleeves, and volume. Then compare the hold, fluidity, and transparency.

Distinguishing Hold and Movement

A fabric that retains its shape can help define a collar or button placket. A more fluid material accompanies gathers and wide sleeves. Check the opacity, especially for a light blouse, and plan for finishes that remain discreet if the seams are visible.

Don't Forget the Small Pieces

The collar, its stand, cuffs, facings, and pockets occupy part of the fabric. Integrate them into the cutting plan with any necessary alignments. Test the reinforcement on a scrap to avoid unnecessarily stiffening the material, then check the buttonholes and topstitching before final assembly.

Can viscose replace poplin for a shirt?

It depends on the hold of both references and the cut. A more fluid material will yield a different result; collars, cuffs, and reinforcements must remain suitable for the model.
