Fabrics for Skirts: Choosing Volume and Movement

A straight skirt, a gathered skirt, and a long flowing skirt use fabric differently. Compare the hold and fluidity of the fabric with the desired silhouette. Also check opacity and elasticity if the model is fitted.

Anticipating Volume at the Waist

Gathering in a firm fabric creates more volume than a very soft fabric. Constructed pleats may conversely require support. For a waistband or closure, test the reinforcement and thickness to ensure these areas remain comfortable and consistent with the rest of the skirt.

Planning the Hem and Seams

A circular or bias cut may require allowing the garment to stabilize before evening out the hem. Follow the pattern assembly and the fabric's behavior. For an oriented pattern, check the direction on all pieces and plan the necessary yardage for matching.

What Fabric to Choose for a Long Flowing Skirt?

Look for a fabric whose drape follows the movement and whose opacity suits the project. Compare the viscoses and crepes available based on their characteristics, then check the length and width required by the pattern.
