Lining fabric: maintain the drape of the garment

A lining can make a garment more opaque, facilitate dressing, or enhance its interior. However, it must work with the outer fabric and the pattern. To choose your swatch, compare the flexibility, elasticity, color, and care of both materials.

Combine the behaviors of fabrics

A lining that is too firm can alter the movement of a flowing dress. A non-stretch lining can restrict a garment that needs to stretch. Also, check the ease requirements of the assembly: the lining should not pull on the seams or openings of the model.

Test the color by overlaying

Under a light or transparent fabric, the lining changes the perceived color. Do a test with the main swatch rather than choosing solely based on the color name. Plan the pieces and finishes of the lining pattern, then check the necessary length and width.

Should a lining always be chosen in the same color?

No. A close color, a subtle background, or a contrast may be suitable depending on the desired effect. The overlay test helps verify the result, especially with transparent fabrics.
