Fabrics for Jackets and Blazers: Choosing the Structure of the Model

A soft jacket, a structured blazer, and an overshirt do not use fabric in the same way. Compare the hold and surface of the fabric with the pattern recommendations. The result also depends on reinforcements, lining, and assembly.

Examine Areas That Require Support

The collar, lapels, shoulders, and pockets may require stabilization. Test the interfacing with the chosen fabric to ensure it maintains the desired appearance. A reinforcement does not automatically transform a very soft fabric into one suitable for all blazers.

Prepare Layers and Seams

Check the sewing intersections and angles on a test assembly. If the fabric has a jacquard, stripes, or large patterns, plan their position on the front and pockets. The lining must be compatible with the cut and ease of the garment.

Can a Jacket Be Made Without Lining?

Yes, if the pattern and fabric allow it. The interior seams must then receive an appropriate finish, and the reverse of the fabric must be suitable for wearing the garment.
