Structured fabrics: designing volumes that maintain their shape

A structured hold can highlight pleats, a voluminous sleeve, or the lines of a jacket. It describes the fabric's ability to retain a shape without guaranteeing a specific thickness. For your piece of fabric, also compare the drape, opacity, and composition.

Choose a cut that utilizes the hold

Sharp pleats or constructed surfaces can enhance this hold. Numerous gathers, however, can create significant volume: ensure it matches the desired outcome. For a bag or jacket, also examine reinforcement needs and usage constraints.

Prepare areas with multiple layers

Corners, belts, pockets, and facings can accumulate thickness. Make a test assembly and check the passage under the presser foot as well as the pressing of the seams. Interfacing should reinforce useful areas without making the entire garment unnecessarily rigid.

Is a structured fabric always thick and opaque?

No. A transparent fabric can also have structure. Check the transparency and characteristics of the reference separately to choose the construction suitable for the project.
