Abstract fabric: place colors like a composition
An abstract pattern plays with free shapes, solid areas, and color transitions. It may appear directionless while presenting stronger areas than others. The placement of the pattern pieces deserves as much attention as for a figurative design.
Distribute the contrast areas
Observe the entire fabric and identify the light, dark, or very colorful parts. Choose their position on the garment considering seams and cuts. If you seek symmetry, check that there is sufficient repetition of the pattern to achieve it before cutting.
Maintain balance with details
Subtle finishes can allow the composition to express itself; a contrasting border can frame the design instead. In both cases, choose a complementary material whose structure is suitable. For a fluid fabric, also imagine the pattern in gathers and folds, where colors will come together differently.
Does an abstract pattern dispense with respecting a direction?
Not always. Photos and observation of the fabric can reveal a direction or a color variation. Check it before using a head-to-tail placement.
