Patchwork patterned fabric: work with a design composed of multiple patterns
This collection concerns prints that evoke a patchwork assembly. The design can combine several shapes, colors, or patterns on the same fabric. It is not automatically a lot of small pieces to assemble.
Choose the parts of the design to show
Identify the size of the printed areas and their repetition. On a pocket, collar, or small accessory, only one part of the pattern may appear. For a large piece, check the balance between the different areas before placing the pattern outlines.
Compose the joins without confusing print and assembly
Lines that mimic seams may be visible at the garment's junctions. Decide whether you want to extend them or leave a gap. Plan the corresponding yardage, then compare the drape and opacity of the fabric with your project. A patchwork print can be found on a fluid material as well as on a firmer fabric.
Is this fabric necessarily intended for quilting?
No. The classification describes the pattern. For an assembled patchwork or quilting project, check the stability, composition, and requirements of your technique before choosing the reference.
