Geometric fabric: anticipate the repeat and matching
Repeated shapes make alignments particularly visible. For a shirt, dress, or accessory, observe the width of the pattern and its symmetry. The fabric calculation must consider how the shapes will meet at the seams.
Choose a reference line
Identify an axis of the design to place the center on the front, back, and pockets. Ensure this axis respects the grainline necessary for the pattern. An irregular repeat or asymmetrical pattern requires checking the orientation of each piece, even when the design seems simple at first glance.
Reserve fabric for visible areas
Prioritize placing pieces where the matching matters, then complete the cutting plan with smaller elements. Draw some pattern markers on the template to facilitate matching. On a pleated cut, also check how the shapes overlap once the volume is closed.
Does a geometric fabric require a symmetrical cut?
No. You can seek an offset effect, but it's better to plan for it. Flat placement allows you to distinguish a deliberate graphic choice from an unintended match after cutting.
