Retro fabric: connect the pattern to the silhouette of the pattern
A retro-inspired print can evoke an era through its colors or shapes, without imposing a specific cut. For your project, compare the scale of the design with the details of the pattern: collar, pockets, fitted waist, or yokes.
Adapt the design to small pieces
A large pattern may disappear on a small collar or waistband. Choose the parts of the design you want to highlight and check their repetition. For a shirt dress, also anticipate the center front matching so that the button placket does not unexpectedly cut the pattern.
Choose the volume of the garment
A gathered skirt, a loose blouse, and a structured dress require different fits. The retro style of the design is not enough to choose the fabric. Compare the drape and opacity, then plan for collar and waistband reinforcements. Buttons and finishes benefit from being chosen with the actual fabric to appreciate the colors.
Does a retro-patterned fabric have to be old?
No. Retro here describes the inspiration of the design. It does not allow for deducing a manufacturing date or historical origin of the fabric.
