Solid fabrics: highlight the cut and texture
A solid fabric gives significant emphasis to the garment's lines, seams, and material. Without a printed pattern to draw the eye, a pocket, dart, or topstitch becomes a visible detail. Choose your fabric based on the drape and surface you wish to highlight.
Compare textures and reflections
Solid does not necessarily mean smooth or matte. A satin weave, a crepe texture, or a relief can enrich the surface. Also observe the reflections in the direction of the fabric to place the pieces coherently. For a light color, opacity should be checked separately.
Pay attention to assembly details
Test pressing marks, thread tension, and topstitching on a scrap. Small defects may be more noticeable on a uniform surface. If you want to combine two solids, compare their drape as well as their shades: a too-stiff edge can alter the fall of the main fabric.
Does a solid fabric require less length?
The absence of a printed match may facilitate placement, but the direction of the nap or reflections sometimes still needs to be respected. Calculate the fabric based on the pattern, width, and these constraints.
