Graphic fabric: compose with lines and contrasts
A graphic print can become the centerpiece of a garment. To keep its design readable, compare the size of the shapes with the pattern pieces. A simple cut and a rich construction with yokes do not show the pattern the same way.
Choose the placement areas
Identify the strong lines, solid areas, and the most visible contrasts. Imagine their position on the center front, the bust, or the pockets before cutting. For a large design, a continuous surface may better preserve the composition; for a small repeated pattern, the details of the garment take up more space.
Combine the graphic design with the drape
A fluid fabric makes the lines move, while a more structured material presents them differently. Therefore, compare the fluidity and structure in addition to the colors. If you add a solid border, choose a material compatible with the main fabric. Finally, check the direction of the design and the necessary matching in the cutting plan.
Does graphic mean necessarily geometric?
No. A graphic print can play with lines and contrasts without forming a regular geometric repetition. Photos of the fabric allow understanding its composition.
