Slightly Stretchy Fabrics: Distinguish Flexibility from Required Stretch
Low elasticity can provide some movement without meeting the needs of a knit pattern. To choose your swatch, compare the actual stretch to the model's recommendations and observe in which direction it occurs.
Check the Useful Stretch Margin
A slightly fitted pant or skirt may require precise behavior. The term slightly stretchy does not give a universal percentage. Measure according to the pattern method and also observe how the fabric recovers its shape after moderate tension.
Preserve Behavior at Seams
Make a test assembly and check that the stitch accommodates the intended movements. Reinforcements, linings, and closures must be compatible with the assembly. Avoid pulling on the pieces during sewing, as their elasticity can lead to wavy edges.
Is low elasticity sufficient to sew a legging?
Not if the pattern requires strong stretch. The swatch must meet the precise requirements of the model; light flexibility cannot replace the necessary stretch.
