Non-Stretch Fabrics: Plan for Ease and Openings

A non-stretch fabric cannot rely on stretch to follow movements or allow for easy dressing. The pattern must therefore incorporate appropriate ease and openings. This characteristic does not mean the fabric is rigid: it can be soft and fluid.

Choose a Compatible Pattern

Ensure that the model is designed for this behavior, especially at the shoulders, hips, and neckline. A closure, buttoning, or loose cut may be part of the necessary assembly. Do not eliminate these elements assuming that a soft fabric will stretch enough.

Respect Cutting Directions

Place the pieces according to the grainline indicated. A bias cut may alter the fabric's behavior, but it does not automatically replace a stretch material. Test the seams and finishes, then check fluidity and opacity separately to choose the swatch.

Can I use this fabric for a jersey pattern?

Not directly if the pattern depends on elasticity. Choose a model intended for non-stretch or make an appropriate adaptation before cutting the final fabric.
