Soft fabrics: choose a material that retains little rigidity

A soft hold means the fabric retains less rigid shape. This can be of interest for comfortable garments or loosely constructed silhouettes, depending on the pattern. Also compare fluidity: a soft material does not necessarily have very mobile drape.

Adapt details to the lack of rigidity

A collar, belt, or pocket may require reinforcement to maintain the desired shape. Test it on a scrap to avoid excessively stiffening the piece of fabric. Large surfaces and sleeves should retain the desired behavior in the overall silhouette.

Check independent properties

Softness does not guarantee either elasticity or opacity. For a fitted garment, check the required stretch; for a light color, examine the overlays. Then choose the finishes and any lining so as not to restrict the main material.

Are soft and fluid synonyms in fabric choice?

They describe two closely related but distinct aspects: hold concerns shape retention, while fluidity pertains to the movement of the drape. Cross-reference both indications to refine your choice.
