Fabrics for Tops and T-Shirts: Distinguishing Knit and Woven

A top can be made from a woven fabric or a knit, while a t-shirt pattern often uses stretch for ease and fit. Before choosing your fabric, identify the construction and elasticity required by the model.

Check the Neckline and Armholes

A garment without closures must allow the head and arms to pass through. Compare the required stretch rate with that of the fabric. For a woven top, check the ease and the intended opening system. Fluidity cannot replace the elasticity needed in these areas.

Choose Compatible Finishes

A knit neckline band must regain its shape; a woven top facing follows a different logic. Test the assembly and hem on a scrap without pulling the fabric. For a light or fitted fabric, check the opacity under the conditions of the garment worn.
